The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) successfully held its Emergency Congress on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Islamic University in Accra. The event, attended by delegates from across the country, was marked by a peaceful and transparent electoral process, conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission of Ghana and guarded by the Ghana Police Service.
The primary agenda of the Emergency Congress was to elect new national executives to steer the affairs of the Union for the upcoming term. The process was characterized by spirited campaigns, robust debates, and a firm commitment to unity and progress among members.
The elections were conducted with strict adherence to electoral guidelines to ensure credibility and fairness. Delegates from tertiary institutions nationwide cast their votes in a highly organized manner, with representatives from the Electoral Commission of Ghana overseeing the process. The Ghana Police Service provided security, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for voting and the subsequent announcement of results.
Daniel Nii Korley Botchway emerged as the elected President of NUGS, securing the majority of votes cast. His election was met with applause from the Congress as delegates expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Union. Other key positions, including the General Secretary, Financial Controller, and Women’s Commissioner, were also filled during the elections.
In his acceptance speech, Daniel Korley Botchway emphasized unity and a shared commitment to the Union’s core mandate. He stated: “This is a victory for all Ghanaian students. Together, we will continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of students across the country. NUGS will remain a force for positive change in education and student development.”
The newly elected executives have been tasked with addressing pressing issues affecting students, including advocacy for scholarships, improved campus infrastructure, mental health support, and enhanced student representation in decision-making processes. The Union will also continue to engage with stakeholders, including the government, to address challenges facing education in Ghana.
NUGS extends its gratitude to all delegates, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, and the Ghana Police Service for their roles in ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
As the new leadership takes office, the Union remains committed to fostering unity, advancing student welfare, and promoting the interests of over 13 million Ghanaian students nationwide.
