Under Article 38 (2) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the government has
an obligation to provide free quality basic education for all Ghanaian children, irrespective of
gender, geography, religion, socio-economic status or one’s disability. The Education
committee of the National Union of Ghana Students, led by the Secretary for Education and
the five education officers of the union, has taken cognizance of the various reportages in the
mass media about the growing concern regarding the deplorable states of state-owned
educational facilities especially and the basic and secondary levels. The committee has also
painstakingly conducted narrowed research in certain communities amongst the northern
region to assess the state of schooling facilities. The result of our research confirms the
reported heart wrenching state of some of these facilities.
Popular amongst the needed facilities that were absent in some of these areas include but not
limited to a marker or chalk board, washroom facilities, life jackets for students who travel by
water to their various institutions that are miles away, and a host of other very vital
necessities.
In view of the above and realizing the need to make proper provision to ensure that education
is enjoyed in such areas as a right rather than a privilege, we at NUGS have decided to
embark on a project dubbed “Basic School Support Project”, geared towards soliciting for funds to
aid in the provision of these amenities.
We are highly convinced and convicted that donating and supporting these school children in
these underprivileged areas will go a long way to help in the realization of their dreams.
We are committed to providing life jackets to students who travel by boat to their various
schools in neighbouring towns, chalk boards to schools with very deplorable ones or none at
all, bicycles to students who walk miles to school from home, to aid in easy movement, the
construction of a washroom facility for schools with none or very deplorable ones, etc. It is
our aim to be able to fund these projects through fund raising from individuals, corporate
entities and well-meaning organizations to support our students in deprived communities.
Goal
The goal for this donation and mentorship for the school in deprive communities in Oti, Volta
and Upper East region of Ghana are to enable them complete their basic education suscceful
and have sustainable living after graduating.
