On the 4th of March 2023, the maiden edition of Girl Power which took place in the University Of Cape Coast was organized by the National Union Of Ghana Students (NUGS) in collaboration with the LNUGS Women’s Commissioner of the University of Cape Coast. The program brought together established women leaders to mentor young women and help them unlock their potentials for the future.
The program started at 9am with the informal sessions led by the NUGS President (His Excellency Dennis Larbi-Ampofo). Miss Phylis had the chance to interact with the students about Campus Secure. An astonishing performance was received from Elorm GH. The event was chaired by Prof. S.Y. Mensah, a former provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, UCC. The LNUGS Women’s Commissioner welcomed all guests and students and expressed her joy of hosting the maiden edition of Girl Power.
An opening speech was given by Hon. Inna Koviao Hengari (MP, Namibia). She talked about her journey to becoming the youngest Member of Parliament. She urged young women to take responsibility for the change they want to see.
Dr. Stella Agyemang Duah, a research scientist and lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology talked about failure as being a part of success. She encouraged young women to align themselves with people they looked up to, acknowledge their uniqueness and how to contribute to making them who they want to be.
A music interlude was received from Eegraff School of music before Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann delivered her speech. Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann (Quiz Mistress, NSMQ) tasked young women to personally audit their personalities which goes a long way to improving their confidence. She advised young women to stay focused and not “major in the minors”.
A plenary session was held among the invited guest speakers, hosted by Miss Kumba Tamba (Former UCC General Secretary). The speakers reflected on how far they have come and evaluated their achievements.
Nana Ama McBrown (Actress/TV presenter), urged young women to work hard and not be limited by anything. She encouraged young women through her personal life experiences.
Presentations were given to the speakers as a form appreciation. The LNUGS secretary expressed her profound gratitude to the guest speakers and all the students. The program came to a successful end at 3pm and students had the chance to interact with the speakers.
