NUGS AND TTAG LEADERSHIP ENGAGE IN PRODUCTIVE DIALOGUE WITH MINISTER OF EDUCATION ON CETAG STRIKE AND OTHER CRUCIAL MATTERS

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr. Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel, together with the Leadership of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) led by Mr. Abdul Razak, held a pivotal meeting with the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. The discussions primarily focused on the ongoing CETAG strike and other pressing educational issues.

The meeting aimed at finding a lasting solution to the CETAG strike. There was a collective effort to explore how the government, CETAG, and the Labor Commission of Ghana could arrive at a consensus and meet CETAG halfway to ensure that lecturers return to the classroom as soon as possible. The Minister of Education expressed his ever readiness to meet CETAG tomorrow to seek a resolution.

Dr. Osei Adutwum shared that he has directed the Ghana Education Teaching Council (GETEC) to compile a list of all teachers who are due for promotion and those with the requisite status to be remunerated accordingly. He assured that he is fully prepared to engage with CETAG and address their concerns within stipulated timelines.

An interesting proposal that has received the support from the Minister was the independence of Colleges of Education as a solution to some of the issues raised by CETAG. He mentioned that plans are underway to upgrade the first eight Colleges of Education to the status of independent universities. This shift aims to reconsider the perpetual affiliations of some colleges to universities.

Other critical discussions included:

Adjustment in Teacher Feeding Components: The rising cost of living and inflation have significantly impacted the teacher feeding components. The Minister acknowledged these concerns and emphasized that the government is actively reviewing the feeding grant allocations to ensure that they are sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of teachers and students alike. An adjustment is expected to be implemented soon to reflect the current economic realities.

Two Months Trainee Allowance Arrears: Many teacher trainees have faced financial difficulties due to the delay in disbursing their allowances. The Minister assured that the processing of the two months’ arrears is nearing completion, and payments will be made shortly. This move is expected to alleviate the financial strain on the trainees and help them focus on their studies without undue stress.

Infrastructure Deficit in Training Colleges: The lack of adequate infrastructure in many training colleges remains a pressing issue. The Minister acknowledged the urgent need for upgrading facilities to provide a conducive learning environment. Plans are underway to renovate existing structures, build new classrooms and dormitories, and equip laboratories with modern tools and technologies to enhance the quality of education and training

Delay in Postings of 2022 Graduates: The delay in posting 2022 graduates has been a source of anxiety and frustration for many. The Minister clarified that the delay is due to changes in the posting process aimed at allowing graduates to choose their preferred posts. This new process ensures better alignment between graduates’ qualifications and job placements. Furthermore, appointment letters will now be issued at no charge, removing a financial burden that graduates previously faced

The Minister also highlighted the significant improvementsgoing on in pre-tertiary education, particularly efforts to equip junior high schools to better prepare students for the transition to senior high school. This initiative aims to bridge the educational gap and ensure a seamless progression for students.

The meeting concluded on a positive note with assurances from the Minister and a commitment to addressing the concerns raised. We encourage or fellow Trainee Teachers that we will do everything within our reach to help find remedies to these issues.

NUGS and TTAG express their profound appreciation particularly to the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw OseiAdwutum, and the government for their attentive and proactive approach to these issues. Their willingness to listen and act on the concerns of students and educators is highly commendable.

NUGS and TTAG remain committed to advocating for the interests of students and educators in Ghana and will continue to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to achieve lasting solutions.
